Testing New Waters: Watching a New Anime

If you’re someone like me who is afraid to try new things, then you might know where I’m coming from with this post.

I am a junior in college and I haven’t even so much as passed a glance at anime since high school when my roommate showed me Attack on Titan in August. I was skeptical, of course. Every anime I was shown since 2010 only kept my interest until the end of the first episode.

Since entering the Attack on Titan fandom, I have been afraid of trying out a new anime. Am I replacing Attack on Titan as my favorite anime? Will I compare a completely different anime to Attack on Titan? Is it even possible to like another anime as much as I like Attack on Titan?

It’s been on my mind for a while now. I have, however, chosen to at least sit through, at minimum, the 1st three episodes of Noragami. I chose this anime because of my roommate’s recommendation and also because Levi and Eren’s Voice actors are in it, so I can have comfort having something from Attack on Titan in there.

My consensus? I’m already on episode 5 and I can’t stop watching it. I may have discovered a new fandom to belong to. I realized that i’m not  replacing Attack on Titan like I thought I would. I’m still scared to try anything that my roommate wont recommend, but I am glad I decided to watch this anime

Second and Third Round of Attack on Titan Dub Voice Actors Released

Guys, I’m just so excited because the guy that voices Leon Kennedy in Resident Evil 6 is Levi. (Please excuse me while I go fangirl in the corner!!)

Okay guys I’m back! WOW! I am so excited with all these released names. I’ve heard snippets of the voice actors of Jean, Sasha, and Connie and I couldn’t be more excited. I think Connie’s voice actor is just perfect for the role. As an Attack on Space fan, I am used to Jonah Scott as Jean, but I think Mike’s voice will grow on me. Without further ado, here is the next two waves of characters and voice actors! You can also click here for the Jean/Connie/Sasha voice snippet and click here for the Levi/Petra/Hanji snippet!

First Round of Attack On Titan Dub Voice Actors Released

Exciting News! Today, Funimation released the the first batch of voice actors for the dubbed series of Attack On Titan. Today’s reveal included the following characters with their voice actors, respectively:

* Erwin Smith: J. Michael Tatum
* Marco Bodt: Austin Tindle
Keith Shadis: Patrick Seitz
Carla Jaeger: Jessica Cavanagh
Grisha Jaeger: Chris Hury
Hannes: David Wald
Moses: Jeff Johnson

I realized that they did not reveal any of the main characters or fan favorites today. I won’t be surprised if they wait until either the last day of their reveal series or the day of Anime Boston in two weeks for those. Those who attend Anime Boston will also have the privilege of watching the full first episode of Attack on Titan in English before anyone else.

I am honestly scared and excited to learn the rest of the names. I dislike one voice actor in particular that Funimation loves to use for every anime and I am hoping he is not in it. Otherwise, I am please so far with the cast.

This is Real, This is Me: The Troubles of an Overweight cosplayer

As I made my way back to school on Wednesday after my break, my roommate and I were talking about the upcoming con we are both going to and who we plan to cosplay as for the weekend. The number one issue we both noticed concerning our cosplay ideas? Body image.

I spoke about doing a “sexy” version (one which requires a push up bra) of an Attack on Titan character for one day, while she spoke of doing a cosplay involving a bathing suit cut bottom. We are both hesitant simply because of what society tells us what we should look like as women and we definitely don’t fit that “norm.” Some might say we are doing it for the attention, in which we are not, but we want to do it because that’s who we like most and we just want to be our favorite character for a day.

The two categories or groups that cosplayers tend to receive the most negative feedback are African Americans and overweight people. I fall into that overweight category.

resizeeeWhen my roommate had her 19th birthday party, it was a costume party so I made a casual cosplay of my favorite Attack on Titan character and I had a blast that night. Being able to be someone who, even though is fictional, inspires me to be me is one of the best feelings one can have. I haven’t been into anime for long, but it’s something that I want to do without worrying about people judging me simply because I am not a size 4.

Why can’t we just let people cosplay who they want and not judge them if they aren’t the same skin color or weight? We are talking about fictional, 2D animated characters. No one will look exactly like who they cosplay.

Cosplaying is supposed to be fun and exciting for everyone and most people don’t know how much money and time goes into most of them. My only wish is that one day we can let go of what society wants us to look like once we step into the convention doors and just have fun.

Anime, Mardi Gras, and Sleep, Oh My!

Today is my first full day of Mardi Gras break from school. I keep getting asked by my friends who don’t live here in Southern Louisiana if I’m going to parades and which ones I’m going to. I simply tell them no and every response I get is “are you crazy? why?”

My answer is this.

I am not a large crowd type of person. I am in constant fear that I will be the one who gets mugged, pickpocketed, and so on. I am also the person, who for the past several years, just stayed home and done nothing. If i did go to a parade, I was with friends at all times and it was always a small parade.

Obviously, now that I am into anime, my options for entertainment have increased, but I just don’t see the big spectacle in pushing people for plastic beads that I already have a lot of.

So what will I do with 5 days off? Of course I have some work to get a head start on for school, but i’m not stressing myself over it. Instead I’ll read fan fiction, sleep, and spend time with my mom. There’s no better way I could imagine spending my break.

I know it’s different for people who are not from around here, I get that! I love experiencing new things in different places. But for me, this is what Mardi Gras is to me. Time to have some relaxation and peace.
